“Hunger Games” is certainly the best film I have seen since many many months, and it is a very successful adaptation of an excellent book.
In my personal opinion, both the book and the film are much deeper and much more ambitious, than what most critics and reviewers would make us believe. After reading the reviews in “New York Times”, “Le Monde” and on “Msn.com” (to cite only few) I was surprised that they mostly missed everything that is important in this film. With a kind of amused superiority, which people from Capitol in this movie would immediately recognize, the “professional” reviewers pointed at the obvious allusions to gladiator fights, the reality shows, the importance of trashy entertainment in today’s TV, the search for a new franchise able to replace “Twilight”, etc., etc.
But they almost entirely failed to see, that this film is first and above all about much more important things: how to keep hope, not lose the courage and preserve humanity and dignity under a totalitarian oppressive regime.
I believe that almost everybody now knows that when writing “Hunger Games” Susan Collins attempted basically a modern (even futurist) retelling of the old Greek myth of Theseus and Minotaur. According to this ancient tale, after losing a war, every year the city of Athens had to send a tribute of seven young men and seven maidens to the king of Crete. Once there the young people were locked in the Labyrinth, to be devoured by the monster Minotaur. This yearly punishment and humiliation lasted until Theseus, crown prince of Athens, volunteered to be one of the tributes and once locked in the Labyrinth he defeated and killed the Minotaur.
In “Hunger Games” what was once United States (and I think also Canada) is now called the Panem. It is a country divided in twelve Districts remaining under the control of the Capitol central metropolis. There was once thirteen Districts, but when they rebelled against the central power, the Capitol destroyed completely the District 13 with all its population and then defeated and submitted again the twelve others. In order to remind to its subjects how absolute is its power, the Capitol claims a yearly tribute – one girl and one boy of ages from 12 to 18 from every District. The tributes are then send to an arena and forced to fight, until only one remain alive. This yearly event is called the Hunger Games and it is shown live on TV to all the population of Panem. This film tells the story of what happened at the 74th edition of Hunger Games…
For Capitol the purpose of Hunger Games is to remind yearly how powerful is the central metropolis and how dire can be the consequences of its wrath, but also – and even more importantly in my opinion – to humiliate and degrade the people of the Districts by forcing them to become accomplices (even if under duress) of a barbarian custom in which some of their own children are send to the slaughterhouse. And as all bullies and abusers know, it is much easier to oppress, abuse and brutalize victims who lack self-esteem…
Well, in this film we can see how one of the tributes from District 12, an exceptionnal young girl named Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), manages to turn the tables on the Capitol and by allowing people of Panem to regain some of their dignity she will be the pebble which starts the avalanche. The exact way in which she does that will not be revealed here, but both in the book as in the film it is described in a very intelligent and very moving way…
This may seem a rather improbable thing that a 16 years old child can do something that will ultimately bring down a seemingly invincible and all-powerful tyranny, but let’s not forget that in the real world, the great wave of revolutions of Arab Spring began on 18 December 2010 with a desperate gesture of a dirt-poor 27-years old Tunisian street vendor, Mohamed Bouazizi, who set himself on fire after having been robbed and beaten by the corrupt local police one time too much… Less than two years after, the opressive regimes in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya already collapsed, the seemingly invulnerable dictator of Yemen had to resign and the Syrian brutal regime is facing a massive armed rebellion..
Bottom line, this film is first and before all a story about how even a seemingly powerless person can horribly hurt a tyrannic regime with a magic potion made of lots of courage, an ice-cold determination, a great personal dignity, a little compassion, a handful of flowers, a couple of tears and one defiant and powerful gesture…
The powerful message and excellent scenario are not the only reasons why I consider “Hunger Games” as a masterpiece. Actors were selected very carefully and they perform well. Jennifer Lawrence is simply perfect – there is no other word to describe her performance! However, after seeing her in “Winter’s Bone” and “X-Men: First class” I didn’t…
Before I delve into my review, let me start by saying that I enjoyed this movie. I waited in line nearly six hours to see the midnight showing and was not disappointed. So why only three stars? Because the movie could have been soooo much better.
I will say that it was a good book-to-movie adaptation. Following in the style of “Harry Potter” and “Lord of the Rings”, “Hunger Games” stays true to the book it is based off of. It did cut some things, but no book-based movie is ever perfect. I was impressed by how well it followed the book. This movie didn’t seem like some vague abstract adaptation of the book–where the only thing similar between the book and movie was the title. It was one of the better book-based movies out there.
Now for my complaints with the movie.
***SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THE BOOK/SEEN THE MOVIE***
–The Games: The Games themselves were rushed. While the Capitol scenes, when Katniss and Peeta were getting prepped for the games, were well-done, I think they could have trimmed some scenes. It wasn’t so rushed that I was thinking, “What the heck is going on?” But some of it seemed very jumpy, like the director was filming this thinking, “Must stay within 2-and-a-half hour time frame.” The scenes that really suffer from this are the cave scenes. Once Katniss finds Peeta, they’re given all of about fifteen minutes until the end of the games. The scenes in the cave were important in the books–Katniss pretending she likes Peeta so they can both win and get sponsors, while Peeta thinks the love is real. Here, the romance seemed very forced. It had nothing to do with the acting, but the short amount of time spent on these scenes. Katniss and Peeta’s romance in the film just felt awkward. The final Cornucopia scene, with Cato and the Mutts, felt rushed as well. It wasn’t a bad scene, but again, it suffered from moving a bit too quickly.
Speaking of those two scenes…
–Awful dialogue in the cave scene: Katniss and Peeta had some truly terrible lines in that scene. Peeta got the brunt of it. Some of his lines made him seem like a stalker. “I watched you. Every day.”
–The Mutts: Now, the Mutts didn’t have to look the way they did in the books. I think trying to make them look like the tributes may have ended up coming across as cheesy and CGI-laden. But these didn’t look that scary. They were a little scary at first, but not as terrifying as they could have been.
–Rue: This has nothing to do with the actress. Amandla Stenburg (Apologies if I misspelled her name) portrayed a lovely Rue. However, our time with her is more short-lived than her life. We get little time with Rue. The audience gets the impression that Rue is a sweet little girl, but we never really get much beyond an impression. We see that Katniss and Rue trust each other, but we never really get any of the sweet scenes from the book. While Rue’s death scene was emotional, it could have been much more tragic if we got more time with Rue.
–Awkward silences and shaky cinematography: The silences worked occasionally and did add dramatic effect. But the rest of the time, it just didn’t work. It was awkward during the silent moments. The shaky camera/cinematography was terrible. I understand what they were going for–the feeling you were in the arena–but it made it way too hard to see what was going on. I couldn’t tell who was fighting who, who had died, etc. I also didn’t like all the zooming-in they did. All the zoom-ins on the Capitol people–their eyes, their lips, their noses. I know they wanted us to see how odd the people of the Capitol were, but again, it just seemed awkward. The zoom-in of Katniss’s lips before she destroys the Career’s food was also weird and only detracted from the scene.
–The score: I expected some great music in this movie. It just seemed like the type to have an epic score, like “Harry Potter”, “Star Wars”, “Lord of the Rings”, and other blockbusters. Not so with this movie. A lot of the awkward silences, mentioned above, could have used the score. There were a few songs on the soundtrack that were beautiful and would have worked well. “Safe and Sound” was a good song and would have worked well when Rue died or when Katniss had to leave Prim in District 12. Instead, this song is used in the credits. The music that we did hear sounded very reminiscent of other movie’s scores. The “ooo-ing” heard in the District 12 scenes sounded a lot like the “ooo-ing” in the seventh and eighth Harry Potter films. Then there was one song, that I believe was played in the cave scenes, that had a section in it that sounded as though it had come straight from the Shire theme song from “Lord of the Rings.” I was very disappointed in the music.
–Cinna: I don’t think Lenny Kravitz made a good Cinna. He wasn’t in much of the film, but I feel like Kravitz had too much “swag” to him to play the more…
I enjoyed this movie. Yes, I’ve read the books. People will always be upset because things are always missing from the story when you take a book and transfer it to film. I thought it was done well. Other people didn’t understand the concept. This is a trilogy, you’re not supposed to learn everything in the first book. Everything will come together, and there will be more understanding. Overall, it was a great representation of the book, in my opinion.

After reading the reviews on here about damaged packages, I went straight to the NYX website and order’d through them. It took like 3 or 4 days for the processing of the order, and then another 2-3 days for shipping. I think I got it like a week after I order’d it.
I love this kit! No, the mirror doesn’t sit straight up, but the box is only a few inches tall & I don’t think you could use it if did sit straight up…but that’s just me, it might work fine for someone else if it did go straight up. But it will lay flat back. I leave it up at an angle and use it without any trouble at all. I would love for a pink eyeshadow to be in the pallet, but when I’ve needed a touch of pink, I’ve used the pink blush as an eyeshadow. I haven’t had any issues using the blushes b’cause they are in a line, I get a tissue and blend the colors that I want to use before I put my blush brush to my cheeks.
The applicators that come with the box aren’t great. But, I don’t like most applicators that come with makeup kits, so I invested in a set of brushes from Bare Minerals a while back. And they work wonderful.
The colors are highly pigmented and easily blended. The liquid eyeliner is a little slow to dry, but that could be more my application of it than a design of the product. LOVE the lip gloss pots!!! I haven’t used the mascara that came with it yet, so I can’t say how it does. I am beyond happy that I bought this kit.
If you love to play with your look, this is the way to go. So many choices, and for around the same price as just a couple items from places like Wal-Mart. The quality of the makeup is excellent, and it doesn’t feel like it’s caked on. I love it and get tons of compliments on my makeup, even to the point of having several friends on FaceBook get the kit.

NYX may be a reputable makeup company, and may be good makeup, but this Beauty Box just didn’t work. When I opened the box, one side had been broken as though hit at high impact–enough to tear up the plastic protective covering. The lower level was missing a blusher, which seems to have come unglued and been lost in the big black plastic box somewhere. Many of the eyeshadows were cracked and damaged, and since there is no damage to the outside gift box or to the shipping box, I know that this was damage done early on. And since someone else had the same trouble, I’m wondering how many other boxes are defective, too. I would have otherwise attributed this to a one-time error and not reviewed it harshly at all.
It’s such a fabulous beauty kit with so much to use and so many beautiful colors that it really makes me unhappy that it’s almost unusable.
